Cotton

Background

About cotton

Cotton is the most important plant fiber in textile industry. It is the major source of apparel fiber and accounts for over 50% of all clothing produced worldwide.

The highest quality demands are placed on organic cotton which should be grown  without the use of any fertilizers, pesticides, other synthetic agro-chemicals and without the use of any genetically modified seed.

But ecological criteria become more and more a relevant purchase criteria or in some cases a basic requirement for the end-customers. As a result textiles produced entirely in line with ecological criteria should not contain genetically modified cotton.

And for the manufacturers the use of the marketing-label „organic“ requires compliance to strict federal regulations regarding how the cotton is grown – which is time and cost intensive.

Problem

Technically unavoidable contamination or adulteration?

It is almost impossible to avoid unintentional mixing of organic and genetically modified cotton in view of global flow of goods not to forget fraudulent intentions of some market players.

Reliable testing methods are necessary to control labeling, to protect consumer rights and to improve the quality control along the production chain.

The key question is: Technically unavoidable contamination or adulteration?

To answer this question exact quantitative statements on the basis of quantitative DNA-analysis are needed.

«Half the world does not know the joys of wearing cotton underwear.»

Phil Gramm

«I wish they'd had electric guitars in cotton fields back in the good old days. A whole lot of things would've been straightened out.»

Jimi Hendrix

«In essence, I'm a sophisticated cotton picker.»
